Reflections from Peter Bakker, President of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and Ambassador Against Hunger, UN World Food Program
Bakker presented aspects of "Vision 2050", a report published by the WBCSD which lays out a sustainable pathway for nine billion people by 2050. The report, which is the result of an 18-month combined effort involving over 200 companies and external stakeholders in some 20 countries, spells out the "must haves" - the things that must happen over the coming decade to make a sustainable planetary society possible.
These "must-haves" include three strategies for a more sustainable food system:
1. Halve Food Loss & Waste
2. Restore Degraded Land
3. Climate Smart Agriculture.
"The vision for 2050 is a radical transformation grounded in science, scalable business solutions and associated policy requirements. We need to focus on quantitative impact and process monitoring," he said.
