World Bank Approves $85 Million Albanian Water-Project Loan

The World Bank has approved a loan to improve water quality and boost waste-water services in and around Albania's second-biggest city and primary port Durres, on the country's west coast.

The bank's board of executive directors agreed to an International Bank for Reconstruction and Development loan of $85.3 million for the Albania Water Sector Investment Project, it said in a statement on its website yesterday.

The money will fund water-supply investment to deal with shortages during the tourist season, as well as linking smaller towns to the city's supply system and improving the services of Durres' water utility. About 400,000 people will benefit from the improvements during the peak tourist season, David Michaud, the World Bank's project team leader, said in the statement.
