Kubota provides technology to Ohio forthe world's largest membrane treatment facility
An international water treatment technology company is building a new Research and Development center in northeast Ohio.
WKSU's Tim Rudell reports on a deal signed Thursday between the city of Canton and Kubota Membrane-USA, a subsidiary of Japan's Kubota Industries Group.
Canton is the midst of an $80-million conversion of its wastewater plant into the world's largest membrane treatment facility.
The technology, which filters at the molecular level, was developed by Kubota. The "city-size" version, being built for the first time in Canton, is from its U.S. subsidiary, which is putting ITS research center in Canton.
Looking ahead
At the deal signing, Mayor William Healy said Kubota is considering manufacturing in Canton and is interested in the region's Utica Shale drilling boom.
"They're not only going to be doing R&D for the normal waste. Because of the oil and gas development, they also want to find a way to see if they can clean the fracwater. That's one of the reasons that they're here: the dual opportunities.
"Imagine if they're able to find a solution to the fracwater problem? And that's one of their goals to be worked on here in R&D."
Local workers
During a deal-signing where the new lab complex will be built, Dave Kirven of the East-Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council said Kubota is trying to work closely with the community.
