"An article authored by IES scientists D. Vanham and G. Bidoglio entitled "A review on the indicator water footprint for the EU28" has been published in the Ecological Indicators journal. The article reviews the water footprint (WF) indicator, which accounts for direct (domestic) and indirect (agricultural and industrial) water use, and its applicability to EU28 (EU plus Croatia) policy. The article finds that 60% of the WF of consumption is internal and 40% is external to Europe. The EU28 is a net virtual water importer. The article finds that great water savings can be made in agricultural production processes, by reducing food waste and changing the diet of the average EU consumer."
