ETH Zürich - Postdoctoral Researcher-Weather and Climate

Job title:  Postdoctoral Researcher on decision support platform development in the weather and climate context

Organization: ETH Zürich, The Weather and Climate Risks (WCR) Group

Location:  Zürich, Switzerland

Closing date:  31st May 2017

The Weather and Climate Risks (WCR) Group has recently been established jointly by ETH Zürich and MeteoSwiss within the Institute for Environmental Decisions (IED). The activities of IED include research, teaching and outreach at the intersection of natural and social science, contributing to the development of effective policy and decision making strategies in the environmental context, both for the public and private sector. The WCR Group works on matching the supply and demand side of weather and climate information in order to improve the resilience of our society in the face of volatile weather and climate change. The Group engages in stakeholder dialogue to co-design decision support tools in areas such as warnings, planning and strategy. The newly established National Center for Climate Services (NCCS) at MeteoSwiss is a key partner in this endeavor.

For the Group’s multidisciplinary team, we are recruiting per September 1st, 2017, or per mutual agreement, a

We are looking for a candidate who is eager to engage with stakeholders and is able to implement co-created solutions in a complex data and model environment. The close collaboration with colleagues at MeteoSwiss provides the unique opportunity to test, evaluate and ultimately integrate decision support systems into an operational weather forecasting chain. Main tasks include the further co-development of the existing open-source climada platform and other prototypical decision support systems together with users to improve the decision process along the full processing chain and across disciplines, both within Switzerland and abroad.

The candidate should have a doctoral degree in computer science or an environmental science discipline with strong computational background. Interest in weather and climate and pertinent knowledge is a clear plus. A true team player and experienced project coordinator, she/he is flexible, eager to work in multi-disciplinary teams. He/she should have strong analytical skills and possess an eagerness to understand and model complex natural-socio-economic systems. Excellent knowledge of at least one programming language/environment is required, as well as familiarity with MATLAB, Python, R or similar. The candidate should have a deep interest in combining natural catastrophe impact modeling with decision support architectures. Fluency in English is a must, German, French and Italian are welcome. The position is located at MeteoSwiss headquarters at Zürich airport, together with part of the WCR group.
