Job Summary:
The Technician, Water Services position is a full time, classified service, nonexempt position within the Shelby County Water Services Department. Work involves installation, maintenance and repair of water meters, lines and equipment. This position performs meter readings and operates water and sewer service equipment along with other duties as assigned by supervision and management.
Qualifications and Requirements:
Minimum requirements:
- High diploma for a state accredited high school or G.E.D. equivalent from a state certified program.
In the State of Alabama a Certificate of Attendance does not constitute a high school diploma. If you indicate on your application that you have a high school diploma and it is determined that you don't, your application will automatically be disqualified. - One year of experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of potable water facilities.
- Valid drivers license.
- Available for on call work after hours and on weekends as needed and as required by supervision and management.
- Willing to work non-standard hours and more than 40 hours per week when required by supervision.
- Willing to work at multiple locations throughout Shelby County as needed.
Preferred requirements:
- Water Certification by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.
- Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class A or B.
- Continued employment may be contingent upon employee obtaining a CDL License within six months of employment.

Working conditions:
Work is primarily performed out of doors and is subject to extremes in weather conditions, wet surroundings, humidity and odors.
Physical requirements:
Work is medium to heavy in nature and consists of walking, bending, lifting, shoveling, carrying and driving.

Shelby County Water Services serves both retail and wholesale customers. The retail customers, who total more than 11,500 accounts, are primarily located in Westover, Chelsea, and the subdivisions of Eagle Point, Greystone, Forrest Park, Forrest Lakes, Mt. Laurel, Regent Park, Villas Belvedere, and Highland Village. The retail customer accounts have grown from 3,200 in 2001. Part of that increase was from the former Westover Water Authority, which merged with Shelby County Water Services in 2007.
