Effective Water Treatment Strategies for Removing Emerging Contaminants

The exponential increase in human and veterinary drug consumption, the use of pesticides and agricultural toxins, the emergence of factories and discharge of chemical effluents from various industries into the environment, diverse detergents, leachate from buried waste, PFAS (known as "forever chemicals" and water repellents), etc., are leading to the presence of new types of pollutants in drinking and usable water. In most cases, municipal water treatment plants and simple water purification devices are unable to remove these new pollutants because these types of contaminants have a more complex structure. From our perspective, several methods can be effective for removing these types of pollutants: Activated Carbon + Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP) + Membrane Filtration:

Activated Carbon for Water Purification: Activated carbon performs well in removing a wide range of organic pollutants, chlorinated compounds, colors, and tastes from water. However, it is ineffective in treating inorganic pollutants such as nitrates or highly resistant substances like PFAS.

Hybrid Solution: Therefore, to achieve the highest level of purification, the use of activated carbon should be combined with other advanced methods such as Advanced Oxidation Technologies (AOP) or the use of Membrane Filtration (RO) in a multi-stage process.

Recommended strategies for removing pollutants:

* Advanced Activated Carbon: For removing organic pollutants and chlorine.

* Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP): To break down the molecules of resistant and emerging pollutants.

 

* Membrane Filtration (RO): For the final removal of fine particles, salts, and remaining compounds.
