Let's help Haiti with the Hippo Water Roller
Published on by Grant Gibbs, Exective Director at Hippo Roller in Technology
Six years after the earth quake of 2010, the people of Haiti are still battling to access fresh water and most often have to walk long distances to collect it. The Hippo Roller offers an immediate solution to their daily struggle of collecting water.
- To date enough money has been raised for 100 Hippo Rollers to be shipped to Haiti. Help us to fundraise for another 100 and ship a 20 ft. container packed with 200 Hippo Rollers in total.

Dear Grant Gibbs,
Good Discussion,
The Hippo Water Roller was developed in 1991 in South Africa in response to the unique needs and constraints of rural women and children across Africa. The award-winning water innovation is a distinctive portable water solution that alleviates the daily struggle of rural communities by enabling them to transport water more easily and in less time than with traditional methods
1.2 billion People live in areas of water scarcity. 750 million people suffer from economic water scarcity, meaning they lack access to safe drinking water. In Africa, 40% of the poorest households do not have piped-in water and more than half of its population lack access to improved water sources such as boreholes, wells, or taps. The 90 liter Hippo Water Roller is a barrel-shaped container equipped with a steel handle with which it can be pushed or pulled. The design of this water innovation allows water to be placed ‘inside the wheel’ so that the weight is borne on the ground and distributed over a wide rolling surface.
Designed in Africa for tough rural conditions, the durable Hippo Roller makes it extremely easy to collect up to 5x more water than a single bucket, by simply rolling it along the ground.

The pumping station may be installed in that are so that the water transport easily with pump & piping, for that purpose wind energy/solar energy may be used for power.
Water-pumping windmills are simple devices. You always enjoy pulling the sheet-metal cover off the gearbox and letting folks see just how a windmill works. I encourage them to spin the hub and watch the internal parts interact. I’ve heard the action of a windmill motor described as “using a big wheel for leverage, like the steering wheel on a big pirate ship.” People also liken it to “a big jack that lifts water.”
