Media filtration for 100 ppm TSS

Published on by

Hi all

Can anyone give me reference(s) to actual operating cases wherein seawater upto 50 or 100 ppm TSS is filtered through a single or dual media filter.  The reference can be of pressure type or gravity type filter.  One of my client's engineer is asking for a single stage media filter capable of treating worst case of 100 ppm influent TSS.  This is a highly unlikely situation to occur. But I would even appreciate references to filters handling 20 to 30 ppm influent TSS and given SDI15 less than 4.

  1. Best method is Multigrade sand filter,  it may be Horizontal pressure sand filter or gravity sand filter.

  2. Hello Anvar,

It is not conservative to consider dual or single media filter as the first pretreatment stage for sea water source containing 100 ppm suspended solids. A flocculation/clarification stage is recommended on upstream. If the source is potential to be attacked be algae bloom, DAF system is needed after coagulation. However, a jar test is recommended before design stage. If the size of plant is large, considering a pilot study is reasonable.

I hope it can help you.
