Reduction of ETP Biological Sludge Calorific Value

Published on by

Dear All,

I am working in a API pharma unit as a Effluent Treatment Plant In-charge. In our ETP we are sending the Aeration Tank (BIO) sludge for incineration. since the incineration coat is higher than Land filling, we were planning to send the bio sludge to land filling instead of Incineration. as per the local solid waste disposal agency, calorific value of the sludge should be lesser than 2500 cal/g, but we are getting 4000cal/g in our sludge.

How we can reduce the calorific value of the sludge? is there any further treatment available to reduce the calorific value?

Thanks & Regards,

  1. PHT - The pressure Hydrothermal Oxidation process is very effective. You can contact us for a Pilot study to see the system's efficacy.   We can demineralise the sludge using our proprietary  PHT technology. This in turn, reduces the calorific value
Alternatively, you can use our Sludge drying system - Spin Flash drying has been used effectively in a CETP, where we use the calorific value in the sludge to dry the sludge.

You can meet us this month in Mumbai at IFAT or write to us at info@aboutfilter.com.

  2. Hello

We can offer our Aquacritox Hydrothermal oxidation process.

The process uses oxygen to completely mineralise the sludge solids. Opex is in the region of €160 per tonne of bone dry solids.

In interested please send enquiry to info@scfi.eu

  3. ETP sludge calorific value is 4000 cal/gm ... as you mentioned. This can be reduced and converted to easily disposable sludge. The quantity of sludge will also be lower. So the cost of sludge disposal will also lower.

Some other sludge parameters like moisture content, pH value etc. reqd. to check the feasibility of our system.

    1. pH- 7-8, Moisture content - 80%,

      1. I suppose after settling in clarifier/tube settler... sludge thickening process is there.

What will bee approx. solid percentage  level in sludge + liquor in settling tank.

will you share details at contact@ctp.org.in

  4. Calorific value basically works on the principle of combustion/heat generation. The sludge generated will have carbon content in it and we can't reduce calorific value unless the amount of carbon is reduced. The best possible way is to send the generated sludge to a boiler/other heat generation unit, where it can be used as a source of fuel;

    1. SOLAR Drying the sludge possibly render it for combustion with useful heat generation.

    2. is it possible to reduce the calorific value by adding and chemicals ? especially oxidizing agent
