Rapid industrialization in Japan since 1950 has no doubt improved lives buthas alsoincreased the urban population drastically. This hascaused a sharp increase in water demand in Japan and the threat of looming water shortages. In order to ensure a stable water supply and comprehensive development of river systems,, the country is exploring solutions such as low lead hydropower generation and utilization of sewage resources.
