In 2024, We are holding the 10th of the Tokyo Sustainable Seafood Summit (TSSS). Over the past decade, the landscape has changed dramatically in Japan.
Historic legislative reforms were made, including the first major amendments in 70 years to the Fisheries Act and the enactment of the Act on Ensuring the Proper Domestic Distribution and Importation of Specified Aquatic Animals and Plants.
Many leading distributors and retailers have established sustainable procurement policies. Moreover, ESG (environment, social, and governance) investment has been gathering momentum in the seafood sector.
Yet still, risks–illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing which accelerates biodiversity loss and fisheries-resource depletion, and human rights violations–prevail in the global seafood industry.
Japan holds the key to solving these issues. Not only is it the world’s third-largest seafood importer, it is also home to the headquarters of world-leading seafood companies. In order to revitalize Japanese seafood industries and guide them toward sustainable growth, it is crucial that Japan, a central player in the global supply chain, actively exerts global leadership.
From TSSS2024 onward, we will commit ourselves to our new goal for 2030, “Making sustainable seafood the mainstream in the Japanese seafood market”.
Together, let’s take action for the future of Japan, Asia, and the world.
