About

Alejandro Dussaillant (AD) is an engineering hydrologist (BEng/MEng at U Catolica, Chile and PhD in civil & environmental engineering, U Wisconsin-Madison, USA) with 20 years’ experience in hydrological processes. He has researched on Patagonian river systems since 2008 including the geomorphic impacts of outburst floods, combining sensor networks and remote sensing data analysis with numerical modelling.

AD headed-up international projects on (1) the impacts of floods and sediment on the sustainability of hydropower in the southern Andes (World Bank and Chilean Conicyt) and (2) mountain hazards in the Chilean Andes (NRDC and Heinrich-Böll foundation), which involved engagement with stakeholders such as state agencies, mining and hydropower industries, & local communities.

AD recently developed novel monitoring techniques in the UK, using low-cost VNIR cameras in a wireless sensor array configuration (Kent County Council 2014), and recently worked on a NERC project examining the 2015 lahars from Calbuco volcano. AD also has extensive experience researching infiltration and recharge to groundwater in urban (SUDS) and rural areas (artificial recharge), including a current research project in Chilean central region.
