I am a ceramic industrial designer, focused on environmental health in the developing world, and as such, I've developed a water filter material of granulated ceramics. This contains a tiny amount of silver, which de-activates pathogens, on their way through the filter bed.  Community sized filter systems, of the granulated ceramics, will give a point-of-use alternative to household systems. Note that there are no chemicals involved, and that there's no need for electricity.
