About

I started my first aquatic invertebrate job in 1987, curating the University's Entomology Collection. I also worked in predictive toxicology at the US EPA's National Water Quality Laboratory in Duluth during the 1980s. I went to graduate school in Entomology at Virginia Tech, and my research on the comparative ecology of invertebrate community response to disturbance of Appalachian headwater streams earned me several awards.  I managed the Invertebrate Zoology Research Section of the Patrick Center for Environmental Research at the Academy of Natural Sciences, in Philadelphia. The Academy is now affiliated with Drexel University and I maintain the position as Senior Adjunct Aquatic Entomologist by frequently working on projects directly with the Academy. I came to Montana, in Nov 1999 to work on a Ph.D. Dissertation developing regional biocriteria for the Montana Department of Environmental Quality. I had to enter the job market before completion of my third degree for medical reasons but amassed over 12 years of advanced statistical and ecological education over the course of my academic career.

I started River Continuum Concepts because, while working for other firms, I discovered that there is an experience gap in aquatic ecological monitoring in North America. There are many firms that can help implement standard procedures for monitoring streams and rivers, however, many times those standard procedures are not the best design to address the questions of concern; the reason for the monitoring program in the first place... We can develop an optimal sampling plan that balances the number of replicates and sites (costs) with the rates of type-1 and type-2 error (benefits) to ensure no single stakeholder bears undo burden in the montioring process. In my 30 year of experience, I have encountered no other consulting laboratory  that can do this.
