Summary of Professional Experience and Qualification

Deepak  D.  Tamang  possesses  over  37  years  of  in  action  research,  development,  environment  and  capacity building in Nepal, Asia wide, Europe and USA.  He started his career as a Project Officer for UNICEF in Water and Environmental Sanitation (WASH). He served as a Programme Officer for Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC) and Swiss Development Assistance (Helvetas) in Nepal.  He subsequently served as the Programme Coordinator for a livelihoods programme of the Swiss (SDC) and German (GIZ) agencies in Palpa district, Nepal.  He also served as the Senior  Technical  Advisor  in  building  capacity  of  self-help  groups  (CBOs)  for  a  Canadian International Development Agency

(CIDA)  supported integrated rural development project in the Karnali-Behri region of Nepal.

 

He established  an  action  research,  development  and  environment  NGDO  in  Nepal  called  SEARCH-Nepal  in  1989.  Since then he has served as the Director and Founding Member.  As a professional member of SEARCH, he has worked in  many  countries  globally  as  a  researcher,  strategic  planner;  trainer,  facilitator,  project  manager  and  team leader for a number of important projects. He has led many projects related to impact monitoring,  evaluation,  building  capacity,  learning  organization  and  peace  initiatives  in  the  last  three  decades.    Notable assignments include  woring extensively  in  integrated  community  development  with  emphasis  on  building  capacity  for  community organizations  and  NGDOs, gender and social inclusion and community resilience and response to disasters.     Deepak  has  worked  closely  with  the  School  of  Environments  and  Human  Settlements Division  of  the  Asian  Institute  of  Technology  (AIT)-Bangkok  and  many  NGDOs  in  Asia  to  develop  management courses for  the  NGDOs.  

Assignments in South Asia involved working with grassroots community centered  natural  resource  management and response to natural disasters such as floods, earthquake and landslides. During the decade of the 1990s and subsequent years in the first fifteen years of the new millennium, Deepak has worked extensively on issues related to gender justice, gender based violence (GBV) and violence against women (VOW).  He has led a number of important action research projects related to Gender and Social Inclusion (GESI) in Nepal and the South Asian Region. He has been active with monitoring and evaluation works especially in sustainable forest management, agro-forestry and agriculture. Deepak's assignments include action research into climate change related gender and socio-economic vulnerabilities of women and socially disadvantaged groups in the Himalayan region and major river basins such as the Brahmaputra in Indian and Bangladesh.

 

Deepak  was  a  British  Council  Fellow  in  UK  and  studied  Organizational  Management  at  the  Cranefield  University (Cranefield  Institute  of  Technology  –  Bedford,  UK).    He  was  a  World  Forestry  Fellow  in  Portland,  Oregon,  USA and  researched  on  forest  management;  climate  change  and  global  warming;  riparian  management  and alternative biomass fuels. He was the Adjunct Professor – Guest Faculty, College of Forestry and Environmental Sciences, Oregon State University (OSU) – Corvallis seconded through the World Forest Center/World Forestry Institute (WFI). He has served as the WFI Senior Fellow in subsequent years for an environmental education program called the International Educators Institute (IEI) program in Portland, Oregon.

 

Besides these affiliations, Deepak is an active member of many national and international NGDO networks including South Asian Women’s Network (SWAN), which is active in nine countries in South Asia on issues related to Women’s Empowerment, Gender and Sustainable Development. He is a well know trainer and facilitator at national, regional and global forums through various development and environment networks, Universities and thematic groups. He is currently  an advisory mentor for Queens Young Leaders (QYL) programme, Cambridge University, UK.

 

Deepak  has  written  a  number  of  books on development and environment,  training manuals, scientific articles  and  technical research  papers  based  on  empirical  and  primary  research in the field of socio-economic and biophysical subjects. He has also peered reviewed number of research papers on socio-economic issues. Currently,  he  serves  as  the  Director  of  SEARCH  and  is  actively  engaged  in  research  related  to  climate change vulnerabilities,  community forestr , agro-forestry,  livelihoods  and  food  security  with  international  and  national  stakeholders,  i.e.  IUCN; ICRAF/CiFOR;  UnivNSW;  UnivAdelaide  and  Australian  Center  for  International  Agricultural  Research  (ACIAR), Canberra, Australia.

Over  100  publications  and  reports  on  development,  environment  and  evaluation  research.    Publications include  books,  journal papers, scientific and technical papers  and  reports  on  development,  environment,  NGDOs  and  building  capacity  for  the  civic society sector nationally and globally. Recently, a book entitled “Citizens, Society and State: Crafting an Inclusive Future for Nepal” is published. He has also contributed substantially in publishing a panel research book called “Revisiting the Status of Women in Nepal – 1981/2015”.
