Dominique Huits

About

I’m Dominique Huits. I work since 1997 at Inagro (Belgium) with a focus on the theme of water in agriculture and horticulture. In the province of West-Flanders the bottle-necks on water supply for the farmers are :
1) the limited availability of (depth) groundwater : mainly livestock farms cope with the challenge to have enough water of a good quality
2) shortage of irrigation water for outdoor cropping : because of the intensification and due to the climate change, there comes a greater need for irrigation water.

I initiate and follow up the applied practical research in order to find innovative solutions to water scarcity at farm level:
1) the use of other sources of drinking water for livestock. Since 2005 I follow up the water quality of different water sources in different circumstances. I’ve introduced in Flanders (2007) the use of water out of depth drainage as a reliable water source, …
2) following up the reliability of drinking water treatment at farm level such as filtration with coconut and lava stones (2007), …
3) the first field trials in Flanders on level-controlled drainage (since 2013)
4) the use of treated waste water from the frozen food industry as irrigation water (since 2013)
