Dr. Charu Basu, Actively seeking new opportunities in and around Zurich

About

I completed my doctoral studies within the Membrane Science and Technology group (MST) at University of Twente (the Netherlands). During the four years, I was also co-employed as a researcher at Wetsus, and worked closely with industrial partners such as Pentair and Philips. During my PhD, I worked on improving performance of ultrafiltration membranes applied in drinking water treatment. The two main approaches followed were a) sustaining the natural microbial ecosystem within the fouling layer while filtering secondary wastewater through the membranes b) application of polyelectrolyte coatings to alter the charges on the membrane surface. Prior to my PhD, I obtained my MS degree from the University of Western Ontario (UWO, Canada). During Masters, I worked on an industrially funded project (Trojan Technologies) wherein I looked into the biodegradation of hormones in wastewater. In this project, I worked on municipal waste activated sludge as the source stream. The aims were a) to develop a protocol to extract and quantify hormones present in sludge and b) to improve the anaerobic degradation of hormones by pretreatment of sludge using advanced oxidation processes. 

 

Besides aforementioned industrial collaborations during academics, I also have 1 year of work experience at Deloitte Touché Tohmatsu in India, where I worked in Environment Sustainability Services and acquired the skills to execute projects and prepare project documentation and technical reports. 

 

I am looking forward to learn, explore and contribute towards water treatment and sanitation development across the globe.
