Dr.-Ing. Ramesh Maskey, Professor at Kathmandu University
About
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ramesh Kumar Maskey completed intermediate in Electrical Engineering from the Institute of Engineering, Tribhuvan University (IOE-TU), Nepal in 1979. He has an MSc. in Civil Hydropower Engineering from Byelorussian Polytechnic Institute, Byelorussia (1987). After coming back from higher education abroad, he worked as a lecturer in IOE-TU and as a civil-hydropower engineer in Arun-III Hydroelectric Project at Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) since 1988. Later he also received MSc. in Resources Engineering (1996) and Doctorate in Civil Engineering (2004) from the University of Karlsruhe, Germany. After living and working in Germany for 12 years, Dr. Maskey returned home to take responsibility as a full professor of civil engineering at School of Engineering in Kathmandu University (KU), Nepal in March 2006. He served as the founder Head of Department of Civil and Geomatics Engineering, the coordinator of Centre for Excellence in Production and Transportation of Electrical Energy (CEPTE/KU), an Energy RDC unit of KU. He also served as Academic and Administrative Dean of School of Engineering (2013-2018) and is, at present, the Director of Student Welfare of KU. To his credit, at KU, are the initiation of Bachelor of Engineering in Geomatics Engineering (2007), Civil Engineering (2009), Chemical Engineering (2016) and Architecture (2017). He is the member of Subject Committees for Civil, Geomatics, Environmental, Chemical and Architectural subjects at KU and Civil Engineering subject at IOE-TU, the member of Faculty Board and Research Committee of School of Engineering and the patron of Robotics Club of KU. He served as an international consultant on behalf of Institute of Water Resources and River Engineering at the University of Karlsruhe in 1999 and worked as a visiting professor at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland in 2017. With more 30 years of professional experience in different organizations, his research, development and consulting (RDC) interest cover a wide range of subjects viz., hydraulics of river and dam engineering, hydropower engineering, renewable energy technologies, mini-grid hybrid systems, design, and fabrication of generator and turbines. He developed a mini-grid laboratory, a hydraulic laboratory at KU and a system to generate electricity from watermills in rural areas. He is the recipient of prestigious R&D awards from the World Bank (US$ 5000), USA, Ashden Award (BP 10000), UK and from Poverty Alleviation Fund (NRs 1500000), Nepal, RenewableNepal Award (US$ 46000) to develop and install indigenously made generator and mini-grid for electrification from watermills and micro-hydropower plants in Nepal. Prof. Maskey led various research cum consulting works for national and international organizations in hydraulics and river engineering, conducted training in micro-hydropower engineering and storm-water drainage as well as determining environmental flow in Gandak River Basin (US$ 45000). He is the author of numerous research articles published in prestigious national and international peer-reviewed scientific and engineering journals. He has currently chaired the 5th International Conference on Developments in Renewable Energy Technology 2018 in Kathmandu (US$60000). He has served as a member of International Advisory Boards of different international conferences. He is the member of editorial board of Hydro Nepal Journal of Water Energy and Environment and International Journal on Precision Engineering and Manufacturing-Green Technology, South Korea. He was the founding President of Water and Energy Consultants’ Association Nepal (WECAN) and is also the life member of several other professional societies in Nepal and abroad. Dr. Maskey is the Executive Council Member of UNESCO-NATCOM (National Commission) and the Coordinator of UNESCO-Science Committee. He is currently serving as the President of Nepal-German Academic Association and the Research Ambassador of German Academic Exchange Services, Germany.
