About

Dr Stella Tsani is Associate Professor at the Department of Economics, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, specializing in sustainable development, energy, natural resource management, and economic policy. She is one of the 39 new members, first in Greece, selected on the grounds of the excellence of their scientific research and the demonstrated societal engagement to join the Global Young Academy in June 2022 where she co-leads the Global Young Academy&SDGs group. Dr Tsani engages regularly in prestigious actions at the science-policy interface. She is invited lead author of the 7th Global Environment Outlook (GEO-7), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) flagship environmental assessment, contributing in the economic and financial transformations necessary for the sustainability transition. She is an invited expert contributor in the Scoping Meeting for the IPCC 7th Assessment Report, and contributing academic member of the European Commissions’ Cohesion for Transitions (C4T) Community of Practice. Dr Tsani is a member of the Board of Directors of the  Euro-Mediterranean Forum of Institutes of Economic Sciences, a permanent  member of the MED 2050 foresight group,  Member of the UNEP/Mediterranean Action Plan Working Group on Ocean Economy and Sustainable Finance, and an expert contributor to the International Science Council delegation to the UN2023 Water Conference and policy brief. She is the lead editor of the Handbook of Sustainable Politics and Economics of Natural Resources. Dr Tsani acts as scientific coordinator, partner and invited advisory and scientific board member in several research projects funded by national, regional, and international bodies (European Commission, World Bank, Bank of Greece, Austrian Institute of Economic Research, EEA Grants; more than 30 projects in the last 10 years). She has been selected as expert member of the Body of Knowledge, start-up mentor and trainer for the Cross-KIC (EIT Food, EIT Manufacturing, EIT Climate, EIT Raw Materials) initiative “Finding innovative solutions for water scarcity in Southern Europe”. Dr Tsani acts regularly as expert proposal evaluator for national research agencies and foundations (French National Research Agency, Norwegian Research Council, Onassis Foundation). She has acted as reviewer for the IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate, and has scientifically supported the development of the Smithsonian Science Education Center guide for youth on “Ocean”. Dr Tsani has more than 10 years of professional experience with multi-sectoral networks across the knowledge triangle. Her work applies economic methods and tools at micro- and macro- level, with systems perspective, to address questions related to sustainable development, policy assessment, sovereign wealth management (Sovereign Wealth Funds), natural resources with focus on renewables, hydrocarbons and water, Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems Nexus, institutions, labour markets, technology innovation, economy energy and environmental modelling and scenario analysis. Her publications appear in leading economics peer reviewed journals (Environmental Science and Policy, Resources Policy, Energy Economics, Economics letters, Economic Modelling, Business Strategy and the Environment, Economic Systems, etc.) and in edited volumes. Dr Tsani contributes to the public dialogue and science communication with publications in the media and public dissemination events. Dr Tsani a member of the STEM Women global network and of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network. She leads GY-Energy, a network initiative for awareness, representation and participation of students at all levels, in matters related to energy and resource management policies. She holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Reading, UK.
