Faraj El-Awar

Dr. Faraj El-Awar is the Head of the Global Water Operators Partnerships Alliance (GWOPA) Secretariat, based in Barcelona, Spain. Dr. El-Awar is a water expert with over 25 years of experience. In 1993, Dr. El-Awar joined the Department of Soil and Water Resources at the American University of Beirut where he taught and conducted research in integrated water resources management, dry land hydrology, watershed management, and natural resources conservation. Dr. El-Awar also worked for the United Nations Office of the Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq (UNOHCI) and UNDP Dry lands Development Center in Beirut, Lebanon. In 2006, Dr. El-Awar coordinated the establishment process of the Arab Countries Water Utilities Association (ACWUA), were he was appointed as the first ACWUA Secretary General. Dr. El-Awar joined UN-Habitat in 2008 where he coordinated the establishment of GWOPA and has headed its secretariat since then.
