Gerhard Fourie, Associate Director and Head of Water and Sanitation Department at Burmeister & Partners Pty Ltd

About

I was fortunate enough to grow up in Windhoek, Namibia, where I also matriculated in 1999. I continued my tertiary education at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa where I graduated as civil engineer in 2003. After completing a two year research project, I commenced with my career as civil engineer in 2006 at Burmeister & Partners (PTY) Ltd, one of the largest wholly Namibian owned consulting engineering companies in Namibia. I am currently an associate director and the head of the water and sanitation department at B&P.

Working in Namibia, a developing country, provides a unique and challenging engineering landscape where I was exposed to a wide array of different types of projects and problems. This enabled me to develop a rich understanding of, and appreciation for the practical application of my engineering knowledge. My passion has always been in water projects, but during my developmental years as a junior engineer I was exposed to all civil engineering disciplines ranging from platforms, roads, stormwater and transportation. Eventually I was able to specialize in water and sewer related projects with a wide field of application ranging from hydraulic modelling, hydrology, municipal infrastructure and water and wastewater treatment. Beyond design work I also gained valuable experience in, site supervision, contract administration and project management. I also developed skills extending into the application of available resources, personnel management, engaging with Clients, liaising with utilities and local authorities and procurement of new projects.

I continue to have a keen interest in hydraulic modelling and I wish to further pursue a post graduate degree in water and waste-water treatment one day.
