About

Ian is a Principal Scientist at the Institute of Natural Resources NPC (INR) with over twelve years’ experience. He manages the INR’s Ecosystem Theme and is responsible for coordinating and mentoring a team of scientists and interns working within the theme. Ian is currently the chairman of the KwaZulu-Natal Wetland Forum and asteering committee member for several Water Research Commission (WRC) projects. He is a registered Professional Natural Scientist in the fields of Ecology and Zoology. His primary interests relate to wetland ecology, the assessment and monitoring of these ecosystems, and how this relates to the management of these important natural resources. Recently he has played a lead role in developing national guidelines for determining buffer zones for rivers, wetlands and estuaries, which have been endorsed by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) as a preferred method and referenced in recently revised legislation. Currently Ian is leading a WRC project that aims to develop both a refined procedure for determining Resource Quality Objectives (RQOs) for wetlands and a guideline for the implementation of wetland RQOs. He also has sound experience in integrated water resource management, integrated catchment management, sustainable land management, community-based natural resource management, and biodiversity assessments (both terrestrial and aquatic ecological assessments). He has successfully managed a wide range of research and consultancy projects, including large multi-stakeholder landscape scale projects, to completion.  Ian has authored and co-authored over fifty consultancy reports, which include research reports, information booklets and peer reviewed publications. He has also presented at a host of national conferences.
