Jeanne Gouws, Ecologist: Freshwater at CapeNature
About
I have a Masters degree in Zoology from the University of Stellenbosch. I found my way into Freshwater Ecology when I was appointed into a contract post as an Aquatic Scientist with the River Conservation Unit at CapeNature's Scientific Services. This contract post was to conduct the river monitoring for the then River Health Programme (a Department of Water Affairs initiative) and to compile State of Rivers reports on our findings. I worked as a member of the unit for one year, whereafter I also managed the unit for a further two years before the contract agreement between CapeNature and the Department of Water Affairs came to a close. I was then appointed in a permanent position as an Aquatic Scientist at CapeNature in 2010 and I have held this positions since then. CapeNature is the provincial conservation agency for the Western Cape Province in South Africa. Therefore my work has to do with all things related to freshwater systems, from an ecological, water supply, sustainable use and especially a biodiversity perspective for the whole Western Cape Province.Information
