Luis Cisternas, PhD Chemical Engineering

About

Professor Luis Cisternas joined the Department of Mineral Processing and Chemical Engineering, the Universidad de Antofagasta in 1988 as assistant professor, where in 2001, he was appointed a professor. Professor Cisternas graduated with BSc (Chem. Eng., 1986) from the Universidad Católica del Norte, Chile. During the period 1990-1994, he studied at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA), where he obtained the PhD. Professor Cisternas during 2007 was a visiting professor at CAPEC, DTU in Denmark.

Professor Cisternas’s principal research interest is the use of a systems approach to solving problems in mineral process synthesis, design and analysis. In particular, his research covers the development of systematic (computer aided) methods and tools for solving problems in the mining industries, which can be classified in terms of the following topics: Modelling, design, optimization, and analysis of minerals processes and seawater use in mining.

Professor Cisternas has holds the following positions: Associate Dean of Research, UA (1997-2001); Head of the Master Degree in Engineering Science, UA (1998-2002); Graduate School Director, UA (2001-2004); Executive Director, CICITEM (2008-2011); Program Leader Water & Energy, CSIRO Chile (2012-present).

Professor Cisternas has published more than 100 peer reviewed journal articles, more than 70 conference papers, more than 20 book chapters, 3 books and has made more than 10 oral presentations as invited presenter. He has also given invited lectures/seminars in companies and academic institutions and has organized several workshops on topics related to Mineral process modeling and optimization. By March 2017, 18 MSc-students, 9 PhD-student had submitted and successfully defended their theses under the supervision of Professor Cisternas.
