Mike Dempsey, Managing Director, Advanced Bioprocess Development Ltd.
About
I am a technical innovator in the area of biological processes, with expertise in microbiology and experience of biochemical engineering. Three of my innovations related to improvements to expanded bed biofilm reactor (EBBR) technology have been granted patent status. This technology can be used for treatment or raw, used or waste water, fermentation or biocatalysis.
After extensive pilot plant trials treating activated sludge settled effluent at the United Utilities Davyhulme plant in Manchester (UK), the EBBR was shown to have the lowest cost of ownership and reduce an average inlet ammonia concentration of 21 mg/L to 0.4 mg/L. The process was also found to remove >50% of residual organic matter (BOD), most likely through the activity of heterotrophic bacteria; >60% TSS and >85% bacteria, most likely through the activities of protozoa and rotifers; and 40-60% of the synthetic oestrogen, ethinyl oestradiol (EE2), most likely through hydroxylation by ammonia mono-oxygenase.
The process is not yet commercially available but we have developed it to Technology Readiness Level 7 (prototype package plant, see photo). Nevertheless, if you would like further information, please contact me.
