Tedros Tesfay

About

Dr. Tedros Tesfay has over 12 years’ experience as a Geochemist/ Hydrogeologist evaluating the fate and transport of organic and inorganic chemicals. Experience includes hydrogeochemical site investigations, mine waste (ARD/ML) characterizations, pit lake water quality modeling, aquifer testing, groundwater-flow and (conservative/reactive) solute-transport modeling (via regular MODFLOW and MODFLOW-USG, Pest, Beopest calibrations in GUI and DOS windows), 2D/3D geologic modeling (ArcGIS, gINT, Rockworks, Leapfrog-Hydro), statistical and compositional interpretation of major ions, heavy/trace metals, stable and radiogenic isotopes data to predict hydrogeochemical evolution along subsurface flow paths. Assesses and predicts mine water impacts to adjoining water resources, presents mitigation options and recommends active/passive treatment methods.

He has developed a Hydro-Geochemical Trend Analysis (HGTA) method that lays a foundation for building a defensible Conceptual Site Model (CSM). HGTA decodes the relative proportional relationship of major ions to find hidden patterns and trends within the raw data and use them to independently verify the presence or absence of hydraulic connection among network of sampling points. The method helps decipher the extent of geochemical reactions resulting from mixing of distinct groundwater sources and identifies the governing processes that affect all dissolved constituents alike, including the constituents of interest. Understanding the geochemically evolving distinct subsurface flow path lines, substantiates risk-based source-receptor remedial alternatives. Geochemical modeling and multivariate statistics are vital tools of the method to detect hidden patterns and trends within the raw data. Independent data sets such as isotopes of water, radiogenic isotopes, compound-specific stable isotopes, age-dating analytes, field parameters etc. can validate the results of this low-cost method.
