Lake Eyre (/ˈɛər/ air ),officially knownas Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre ,[1]is the lowest natural point inAustralia, at approximately 15m (49ft)below sea level(AHD), and, on the rare occasions that it fills, the largestlakein Australia and18th largestin the world. The temporary, shallow lake is the depocenter of the vastLake Eyre Basinand is found inSouth Australia, some 700km (435mi) north ofAdelaide. The lake was named in honour ofEdward John Eyre, who was the first European to see it, in 1840. The lake's official name was changed in December 2012 to combine the name "Lake Eyre" with the indigenous name, Kati Thanda .[1]Native titleover the lake and surrounding region is held by theArabana people.[2]
