Filamentous bacterium identification (incl. Physiology), floc morphology examination, microfauna identification, etc. are invaluable techniques to understand the microbial ecology of a (sometimes problematic) activated sludge system in depth, and is a great tool in problem solving like: sludge bulking, foaming and scumming, etc.
