CABEI promotes strategic investments in water and sanitation for the well-being of the people
These initiatives benefit more than 11 million people in the countries we serve
Tegucigalpa, March 21, 2025.- Guaranteeing access to potable water and sanitation is essential for quality of life and sustainable development. With this commitment, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) has promoted projects in the countries we serve to transform the conditions of 11 million people, promoting public health, environmental protection and resilience to climate change.
“ At CABEI we firmly believe that access to potable water and sanitation is a fundamental human right,” said Executive President Gisela Sánchez. ”Our projects go beyond infrastructure; they seek to generate a positive and lasting impact on the health, environment and economy of our region. ”
Through an integrated regional vision, CABEI promotes transformative initiatives in the region. In Guatemala, with resources from the European Union, the Bank is carrying out the feasibility study and final design of the Integrated Solid Waste Management System with the Municipality of Guatemala and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, which will allow, among other things, the technical closure of the zone 3 landfill in the capital city and the adaptation of a new area with infrastructure and equipment, thus contributing to reducing the pollution of the Chinautla, Las Vacas and Motagua rivers. In El Salvador, more than 1.5 million people now have access to clean, safe water thanks to the rehabilitation of the Torogoz (formerly Las Pavas) drinking water treatment plant, and more than 2 million people will benefit from the installation of 5 wastewater treatment plants and 2 desalination plants in the country's coastal zone, reducing the pollution of aquatic ecosystems.
In Honduras and Nicaragua, investments in this sector are making a significant difference. In Honduras, the El Tablón Multipurpose Dam Project will guarantee a stable supply of potable water, reduce the risk of flooding in the Sula Valley and generate renewable energy for more than 17,800 users. In Nicaragua, the multilateral organization is supporting the development of aqueducts and sanitation systems that bring potable water to vulnerable communities, improving the quality of life for thousands of families.
Costa Rica is also benefitting from key water and sanitation projects. More than 4 million people have seen improvements in their access to potable water thanks to seven strategic initiatives, worth more than US$1.5 billion, that are being implemented throughout the country. These include works and improvements to the aqueducts in Liberia, Nicoya, Puerto Viejo, Quepos-Manuel Antonio, Ciudad Cortés and Bagaces, new pumping stations, wastewater treatment plants and more than 159,000 household connections in the Greater Metropolitan Area, as well as the “Water for Guanacaste” project, among others.
Finally, in Panama and the Dominican Republic, CABEI promotes strategic initiatives to guarantee equitable access to potable water and sanitation. In Panama, more than 250,000 inhabitants of the western zone will see significant improvements in their quality of life thanks to the Water and Sanitation Program, which optimizes infrastructure in communities with the greatest need. In addition, water solutions have been supported in remote areas of the country to guarantee access to this essential resource. In the Dominican Republic, the construction of the Montegrande Multipurpose Dam will supply water to 51 communities, strengthening water security, boosting agricultural development and benefiting thousands of families.
As an engine of positive transformation, CABEI reaffirms its commitment to continue promoting innovative solutions that improve the quality of life of the population and strengthen the region's resilience to the challenges of climate change. Through these projects, the Bank not only expands access to basic services, but also promotes well-being and sustainable development in each of the countries it serves.
