Examples of Duties
Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Leads, trains oversees, and works together with assigned staff to ensure the proper, safe and efficient operation of the water distribution system;
- Provides input in the evaluation of assigned personnel, identifies development needs and makes recommendations;
- Drives, operates, and maintains equipment, tools, and vehicles;
- Provides for the training of assigned personnel, ensures adherence to safe work methods, procedures and practices; and provides technical assistance and advice;
- Responds tactfully and effectively to customer inquiries and complaints;
- Ensures timely completion of preventive maintenance programs;
- Prepares requisitions for necessary tools, equipment, and supplies;
- Researches and recommends new operational methods, techniques and equipment, and recommends their application;
- Ensures adherence with safety programs and practices in work methods and procedures;
- Educates employees on rules, regulations, codes, safe work habits and potential hazards presented by their work environment;
- Surveys surrounding work area for proper elevation as per plans;
- Performs additional construction and maintenance tasks including concrete work, truck driving, and a variety of installation and repair activities;
- Maintains and updates a variety of records, logs, reports, and maps;
- Serves as Water Distribution Supervisor in their absence, as requested; and
- Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
Experience:
- Four years of experience in the installation, construction, and maintenance of water distribution system pipelines, valves, and appurtenances.
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent supplemented by courses in water technology.
- Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in water technology, environmental sciences or related field is desirable.
Licenses and Certificates:
- Possess and maintain a valid Class B Commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement.
- Possession and maintenance of a California State Water Resources Control Board Water Distribution Operator Grade D3 Certificate.
- Possession and maintenance of a California State Water Resources Control Board Water Treatment Operator Grade T2 Certificate, or must possess within 18 months from appointment.
Special Requirements:
- May be required to participate in standby/on call program.
Essential functions and duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:
- Regularly sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, climb, and lift up to 100 lbs.;
- Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate and reach with hands and arms;
- Regularly exposed to heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, electrical hazards, and traffic hazards;
- Regularly travel to different sites and locations;
- Ability to distinguish color and wear protective apparel; and
- Must be able to communicate with others and to exchange information accurately.
