World-first filtration system that removes PFAS from drinking water will soon be available in QLD

Queenslanders will soon be able enjoy PFAS-free water from every tap on their home, thanks to new filtration system that will soon be released by Complete Home Filtration.

PFAS (or Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a group of chemicals that can be found in Teflon nonstick products, stains and water repellants, paints, cleaning products, food packaging and firefighting foams.

These chemicals are known as “forever chemicals” because they survive for years without really breaking down and can easily migrate into the air, dust, food, soil and water.

A number of studies have found PFAS exposure can lead to serious adverse health affects, such as liver damage, thyroid disease, decreased fertility, high cholesterol, obesity, hormone suppression and cancer.

In Queensland alone, more than 60 sites are believed to be contaminated by PFAS, which is why Complete Home Filtration has been working on a filter to remove PFAS from home water systems.

Complete Home Filtration Managing Director and Founder Suzanne Dodds said the system they are developing will be game changer, as there is currently no effective treatment system to remove PFAS from household water.

“PFAS is getting a lot of media attention these days. The reason for this is that recently scientists have started to link PFAS to some serious adverse health outcomes for humans, not just here in Australia, but all over the globe,” she said.

“The issue with PFAS is that it is known to be bio-accumulative, in that even low doses over the long term may lead to serious health outcomes.”

Ms Dodds said the world-first Attapure PFAS System is due to hit the Australian market this year.

“The technology that we have developed is a cost effective on-site technology that enables homes to install a point of entry system to their water supply that gives them peace of mind and ensures PFAS is removed from all water as it enters the home.”
