Project Researcher: Digital Twin for flood early warning
Published on by Water Network Research, Official research team of The Water Network for Deltares
We are looking for project researcher who want to help co-designing and prototyping an interdisciplinary Digital Twin Engine. Do you have a background in earth science, data science or applied mathematics (or similar scientific education)? Do you want to work closely with international experts advancing the state-of-the-art for digital twins in Europe? Read on.
About the project:
The interTwin project will co-design and implement the prototype of an interdisciplinary Digital Twin Engine - an open source platform based on open standards that offers the capability to integrate with application-specific Digital Twins. Its functional specifications and implementation are based on a co-designed interoperability framework and conceptual model of a DT for research - the DTE blueprint architecture.
Scope of work as Project Researcher: Digital Twin for flood early warning and climate change impact
You will work with a team of developers and researchers at Deltares (Delft) towards implementing digital twins for coastal and inland flood extreme events, both for early warning and for climate change impacts.
The scope of work includes contributing to the development of tools for advanced workflow composition, real-time data acquisition and processing as well as automation and integration of flood hazard and impact model workflows.
The work forms part of an international project (https://www.intertwin.eu/), and Deltares is involved in:
- Using the Digital Twin Engine, under development in interTwin, to implement a digital twin for early warning of coastal and inland flood extreme events and another digital twin for climate change impacts of coastal and inland flood extreme events.
- Contributing to the development of tools for advanced workflow composition, real-time data acquisition and processing.
- Automation and integration of flood hazard and impact model workflows.
For Deltares the main objective is to demonstrate that the architecture, tooling and capabilities of the Digital Twin Engine can support the implementation of digital twins in different domains. Towards achieving the above, Deltares will build on initiatives and integrate these for deployment on the interTwin Digital Twin Engine.
You are passionate about working in an applied scientific environment and are motivated by technical challenges. Furthermore, you have:
- an MSc or PhD in earth science, data science or applied mathematics (or similar scientific education);
- experience in data processing pipelines and workflow automation;
- experience in programming languages such as Python and Julia;
- a good command of the English language.
It's an advantage when candidates have:
- knowledge of numerical modelling for hydrology and flood inundation;
- knowledge of Machine Learning;
- experience with complex software architecture;
- a wider interest in the application of analytics within the field of hydrologic forecasting.
What we offer
- A 2-year contract to work on the interTwin project and related projects.
- Excellent training opportunities for personal and professional development.
- A competitive salary. Scaling will be based on your experience.
- Opportunities to closely work with international experts advancing the state-of-the-art for digital twins in Europe.
- Deltares has an open, inclusive and collaborative culture.
