Innovative algae-based water treatment technology | Deltares
Published by Water Network Research, Official research team of The Water Network for Deltares in Technology
How can natural processes contribute to cleaner water while also recovering valuable resources? Startup JiTiBa is developing a technology in which microalgae remove nutrients from wastewater. Through the NEW-ttt programme, the Arnhem-based company collaborated with Deltares on the independent validation of this technology under controlled conditions.

Microalgae as an additional treatment step
Water quality in the Netherlands remains under pressure. A significant proportion of surface waters still fail to meet the objectives of the European Water Framework Directive. Nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus play an important role in this challenge, as elevated concentrations can contribute to eutrophication and unwanted algal blooms.
JiTiBa has developed a nature-based technology in which microalgae are encapsulated in specialised gel beads. As the algae grow, they absorb nutrients from the surrounding water. This creates opportunities for the technology to serve as an additional treatment step for wastewater or effluent streams. At the same time, the resulting algal biomass may offer possibilities for recovering nutrients and other valuable resources from residual flows.

From promising concept to validated technology
For startups, the journey from a promising concept to real-world application is often challenging. Potential customers, investors and other stakeholders need evidence of how a technology performs and under which conditions it can be reliably applied.
The NEW-ttt programme supports startups during this phase by providing access to research facilities, specialist expertise and independent validation. This helps identify technical uncertainties at an early stage and creates a stronger foundation for pilot projects, demonstrations and future market introduction.
Validation testing at Deltares
Over several months, JiTiBa carried out validation tests at Deltares to gain greater insight into the performance of its algae-based technology under conditions relevant to applications in the water sector. The project combined JiTiBa’s innovative technology and practical experience with Deltares’ scientific expertise and research infrastructure.
The validation tests at Deltares helped us evaluate our technology under controlled and realistic conditions. The insights gained from these tests give us greater confidence in taking the next step towards upscaling and practical implementation.
