Irrigated agriculture being highly dependent on groundwater resource, has caused fast declining of water level in many parts of the country due to excess withdrawal of groundwater than the recharge. Many of the farmers have to shift from horizontal centrifugal pumps to submersible pumps of higher motor rating to extract water from deeper depths. With increased depth of water table, the energy consumption in pumping water for irrigation has increased manifold during the last 2 to 3 decades. Therefore, it is important to install suitable efficient pump set for irrigation based upon the actual operating conditions at the farm. A mobile application named "Pump Selection" has been developed based on the scientific considerations, that can be used by the farmers, to know the actual operating conditions at the farm and accordingly, suitable energy- efficient pump set can be selected. The pump set selected based upon this app operates near to desired efficiency level for a longer period, thus avoiding wastage of electrical energy and water.
