Protecting water is one of the most immediate ways to make today’s energy system more sustainable

We all know the headline story: water has become a strategic constraint for the digital economy. Data centers depend on it for cooling, hyperscalers are moving upstream to secure supply, and players like Microsoft are making bold moves into water stewardship.

But a different, and far less discussed, conversation is now taking shape. Not in Silicon Valley, but with the old guard of energy. Oil and gas operators are starting to realize that water is no longer a side issue. It is becoming a defining constraint.

Here is the reality: even under ambitious transition scenarios, the world will rely on oil and gas for at least the next 20 to 30 years, and today it still accounts for roughly half of global primary energy supply.

So the question is not whether we engage with this industry. The question is how to ensure that during this transition, it creates as few additional sustainability problems as possible. Water sits at the center of that challenge.

Today, water is the largest waste stream in oil and gas, representing 70–80% of total wastewater. For every barrel of oil, multiple barrels of contaminated water are produced, often increasing as fields mature. In regions like the Permian Basin, operators are now handling tens of millions of barrels of produced water every single day.

The issue is not just volume. It is constraint. Disposal, long the default, faces rising costs, regulatory pressure, and physical limits. At the same time, production is concentrated in water-stressed regions, putting operators in direct competition with agriculture and communities. Once disposal is constrained, water becomes a bottleneck to production itself. That is when the economics shift. If you cannot manage your water, you cannot produce your oil.

And yet, less than 1% of produced water is reused outside oil and gas today. Treatment remains complex and costly, and the system has been optimized for disposal, not circularity. This is where innovation becomes critical. Technologies that lower treatment costs, enable reuse, or recover value from produced water are not just environmental solutions, they are operational ones. They reduce freshwater demand, extend asset life, and improve resilience in a constrained system.

But scaling them requires working with incumbents, not against them. Oil and gas operators control the infrastructure, the data, and increasingly the urgency. The opportunity is to partner with them to rethink water management at system level.

That is the surprising connection: protecting water is one of the most immediate ways to make today’s energy system more sustainable while we build the one that replaces it.
