Research Fellow - Social Learning in Water Management

Location: Remote, reporting to GWPO, Stockholm
Duration: For 6 months, with a possibility of extension
Time Committment: Full time or part time
Start date: April - May 2024
Contract type/funding: This position is considered a secondment; the Research Fellow is thus responsible for securing funding though their affiliated university or research institute. Students receiving financial support from the Swedish Board of Student Finance (CSN) are eligible candidates to apply for this position.
Background
The Global Water Partnership (GWP) is a global action network with over 3,000 Partner organisations in 180 countries. Its mission is to support the sustainable development and management of water resources at all levels. GWP was created to foster the implementation of integrated water resources management (IWRM): the coordinated development and management of water, land, and related resources by maximising economic and social welfare without compromising the sustainability of ecosystems and the environment.
With its partners, GWP supports over 20 communities of practice (CoPs) working on various topics and themes in water resources management. Communities provide professionals an engaging way to learn, exchange, and buiId their skills in different areas of interest. Building on the collective knowledge of the members and ensuring a continuous flow of learning, communities are becoming crucial to bridge knowledge into action and improving our water management practices and systems.
Scope of Position
The Social Learning in Water Management Research Fellow will contribute to conducting research on CoPs and moderating the communities hosted through GWP’s IWRM Action Hub. The Research Fellow will work closely with the Senior Learning Specialist, the IWRM and Knowledge Management Specialist and the IWRM Action Hub team. The position requires a strong background in social sciences, environmental/water resources management, knowledge management, and academic research.
Specific Deliverables
Research and Knowledge Management
- Co-develop a systemic literature review paper examining the effects of CoP in advancing social learning in the field of water management.
- Co-develop a conceptual framework on the effect of CoPs in advancing social learning in water resources management.
- Revise and develop IWRM Tools related to the thematic areas explored in the communities of the IWRM Action Hub.
- Support developing Case Studies for the IWRM Action Hub drawing from the experiences harvested through the communities.
Communities of Practice Support
- Provide support to the learning activities of the UNCCD Community of Learning and Practice on Drought Management, including preparation for case study call out competitions, webinars, etc.
- Identification and write up demonstrator cases for the WEFE4MED CoP.
- Support the moderation of other communities hosted on the IWRM Action Hub by contributing to posting blogs and discussions.
- Identify and upload relevant resources, events, opportunities to the various communities on the IWRM Action Hub.
- Coordinate regular meet ups for the community of moderators.
Qualifications/Requirements
Personal
- Excellent communication skills (ability to understand and be understood, diplomatic skills, drafting skills).
- Enthusiasm, dedication, entrepreneurial spirit, “can-do” attitude.
- Be able to work on your own initiative and with minimal supervision.
- Be able to work independently and in a fast-paced environment and show initiative in designing and implementing new GWP strategy.
- Must be able to multi-task and be detail-oriented.
- Creativity and the ability to think strategically “outside-of-the-water box” is desired.
- Pro-active prioritizing, planning, organizing, coordinating, monitoring, reporting, following up – ability to work and deliver results under time pressure.
Professional
- Currently enrolled or recently completed an advanced academic degree in social sciences, political sciences, water management in relevant discipline.
- A minimum of 1 year work experience in relevant discipline or academic research.
- Experience in conducting qualitative research and participatory methods
- Fluent in English language, good writing skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office; MS Office 365, SharePoint.
- Good computer skills, use of Teams/Zoom and other teleconference tools.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills.
