Water Treatment Engineering
Published on by Tyler Ball for Indigenous Water Partnership
The IWP was founded to address the failure of public systems to provide Indigenous communities with reliable water access. Functioning as an independent, apolitical technical advocate, IWP serves as a single point of contact for First Nations and Inuit communities ready to implement, operate, and maintain robust water-treatment infrastructure. Similar to an owner’s engineer, IWP supports communities through design, procurement, construction, maintenance, and operation, ensuring solutions align with their specific needs, values, and governance structures.
IWP is co-led by Indigenous and non-Indigenous women, recognizing the vital role of women in water stewardship. This shared leadership integrates Indigenous knowledge and technical expertise, ensuring all decisions are community-driven. Our founding team has deep experience in infrastructure, health equity, and community engagement.
IWP takes a holistic approach, addressing both drinking water and wastewater treatment while considering decentralized and centralized systems. By prioritizing long-term capacity-building, we empower communities to sustain and manage their water systems independently, bridging systemic gaps and restoring trust in water services.
Two of our founders are engineers, with over 30 years of combined experience in designing and managing water treatment system.
