About

Lucas Beck is an independent consultant with an expertise in the sustainable use of water resources, conflict assessment and mitigation, and human rights. His extensive experience in the private sector and public sectors, both internationally and nationally, has evidenced a strong competency for interdisciplinary work that emphasizes communications, management, project development and implementation.

He also has considerable experience in the challenging negotiations incident to the implementation of water projects in highly sensitive and culturally-diverse environments, including those in Africa, Asia, Central America and Eastern Europe.

Lucas Beck received his master’s degree in rural engineering from ETH Zürich in 2002. Following this, he worked as a practitioner and hydraulic engineer for projects in Switzerland and, in the humanitarian context, in Africa and Eastern Europe.

In 2010, he received his Ph.D from the Center for Comparative and International Studies at ETH Zurich, during which time he undertook extensive research into water use, water conflicts and water allocation in international river basins. This research involved extensive stays in Southern Africa, as well as stints as a visiting scholar at the Columbia University and New York University in New York.

More recently, Lucas Beck was a co-founder of hydrosolutions, ltd., a consulting firm located in Zurich, Switzerland. He left the company at the end of 2014, though he remains on the advisory board. He also maintains an affiliation with the Center for Comparative and International Studies at ETH, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology.
