Published on by Water Network Research, Official research team of The Water Network for Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology
Are you passionate about research? So are we! Come and join us
The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT. By transforming scientific knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST empowers citizens in their choices, public authorities in their decisions and businesses in their strategies.
You ‘d like to contribute as a researcher? Join our Environmental Research and Innovation department
The Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department, made up of 200 life science, environmental science and information technology researchers and engineers, provides the interdisciplinary knowledge, expertise and technologies to lead solutions including the major environmental challenges facing society, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control.
The department relies on two cutting-edge platforms, the Biotechnologies and Environmental Analytics Platform and the Observatory for the Climate and the Environment, and the GreenTech Innovation Centre (GTIC): a one-stop-shop for the complete development of bio-based products and processes.
RESPONSIBILITIES
How will you contribute?
- To strengthen its activities in environmental remote sensing, flood risk modelling and Earth Observation (EO) applications, LIST is offering a permanent position for a scientist in flood modelling and satellite EO data assimilation. With global change increasingly triggering hydro-climatological extremes, we aim at developing and improving satellite EO-based tools for monitoring and predicting natural disasters at large scale. Our research activities are wired around fundamental and applied questions related to an optimal combination of remote sensing measurements and numerical modelling-based simulations to better understand and predict variations of key environmental variables.
- This research shall contribute to the unit’s long-term goal to develop a very high precision digital twin earth focusing on the water cycle and related applications. To reduce the uncertainties inherent to such models and support evidence-based decision making, we intend to take advantage of and bring together the latest developments in process understanding, satellite Earth observation systems, Earth system modelling, Artificial Intelligence and High Performance Computing.
You will develop / contribute to RDI projects by:
- Carrying out hydraulic simulations to estimate flood hazard and risk across various spatial scales,
- Applying and further developing methodologies enabling an effective assimilation of multi-source satellite EO data and in situ measured data into flood inundation models (e.g., flooding-related parameters derived from Synthetic Aperture Radar and optical remote sensing data) and other types of environmental models,
- Coupling hydraulic models with hydrological and atmospheric models to predict extreme events and to anticipate future changes in flood intensity and frequency,
- Developing research proposals to secure funding at national and international level,
- Contributing to the development of partnerships and networks at national and international levels,
- Disseminating and publishing the results of your research in top ranked scientific journals and international conferences.
Moreover, you will contribute to the dissemination, valorisation and transfer of RDI results through:
Software licensing,
Participation in the drafting of technical reports, scientific articles, patents and inventions,
Participation in the implementation of technological solutions (proof-of-concepts, prototypes).
