We are seeking a Water Resources Engineer with a focus on the assessment and design of river engineering and other water management projects to join our Edmonton, Alberta office. The Water Resources Engineer will work closely with other engineers, hydrologists, hydrogeologists, geomorphologists, CAD specialists, aquatic biologists, and other environmental scientists to deliver a variety of surface water related projects supporting municipal, mining, and oil & gas clients.
The Water Resources Engineer will lead a variety of small-scale projects including watercourse crossings; river engineering; design and construction; and regulatory support. In addition, they will play a key role on a variety of large‑scale projects that span multiple disciplines across Matrix. We are looking to hire a motivated individual with demonstrated experience leading and delivering complex and innovative projects on schedule and on budget.
Matrix has extensive, long standing experience with municipal governments, conservation authorities and private industry clients. The Water Resources Engineer will have progressive experience for a diverse portfolio including both public and private sector clients, oversight and mentorship of junior staff, and coordination with other technical disciplines. The successful applicant will be involved in a broad range of water resource focused projects with responsibilities as follows:
- Actively participate in maintaining Matrix’s strong Health & Safety culture
- Conduct field work including site reconnaissance, surveying (e.g.: RTK, UAV) fluvial geomorphology assessments, construction supervision and field engineering
- Create conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design of surface water projects; this could include river engineering, stream restoration, eco-hydraulics, bioengineering, small hydraulic structures, bank protection, road crossings, pipeline crossings and mine-water management
- Analyze and interpret hydrologic and hydraulic modelling of urban drainage and river-floodplain systems
- Perform watershed assessments, climate and hydrology data gathering and reduction, flow frequency analysis and water supply estimates
- Coordinate and manage projects including:
- Communication with clients
- Create and administer work plans/proposals, timelines and cost estimates
- Contribute to contract administration and tendering
- Obtain relevant provincial and federal regulatory approvals for construction projects
- Coordinate project team members including other disciplines and subcontractors
- Prepare effective reports and various project-related correspondence
- Provide guidance to junior team members
Education, Experience, Technical Skills:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering or Water Resources Engineering
- Registered as a professional engineer (P.Eng.) or eligible to be licensed within six months
- Minimum 4 years of experience with water resource projects, preferably in the consulting industry
- Comprehensive understanding of provincial and federal legislation in relation to river engineering projects
- Previous experience with modelling software would be an asset
- Strong interpersonal skills as well as mentoring experience
- Experience working in a collaborative environment
- Previous experience working in the field is required; must be willing to travel and perform field work
- Possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license and clean driving record
