QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree and Advanced degree in Management, Engineering, Economics, or any other discipline with a quantitative focus; Degree in engineering, ideally with technical knowledge of power systems, is a plus
- Outstanding record of academic and professional achievement
- 8-12 years of prior work experience in the Power and Utilities sector (Electricity, Gas or Water) with at least 3-5 of those years from a top-level consultancy or financial institution helpful
- Deep knowledge in any of the following sector (one or more): Conventional Generation, Renewables, Transmission and Distribution – Power or Gas, Trading, Customer, Water Distribution, Waste Water Treatment
- Proven track record of establishing, growing and managing teams
- Experience in Digital or Advanced Analytics, or willingness to learn, is a plus
- Strong performance acting as a client counselor at the C-suite
- Entrepreneurial spirit and a keen interest and drive in developing a new offering with massive potential and strong sponsorship
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and can work effectively with people at all levels in an organization
- Ambition to work in a fast-paced, result-oriented team, with steep learning curve and strong commitment to coaching and development
- Distinctive problem-solving skills and conceptual abilities
- Interpersonal effectiveness and leadership potential
- Fluency in English is required; Fluency in German is required (for Düsseldorf). Additional languages a plus.
WHO YOU'LL WORK WITH
As member of our global Power Solutions team, part of our Electric Power and Natural Gas practice (EPNG) you will work in our Dusseldorf or Madrid office
Power Solutions is focused exclusively on the Power, Natural Gas and broader Utilities sectors with a track record of successfully delivering technology enabled consulting services and solutions to our clients. Power Solutions combines the most advanced digital tools along the entire energy value chain - from Renewables (utility scale and distributed) to transmission and distribution to New Downstream (e.g. batteries, Hydrogen). We enable the deployment and development of a portfolio of McKinsey proprietary solutions required to successfully tackle and solve the complex challenges of the Global Energy Transition.
These include solutions for predictive maintenance and performance optimization of grid assets, power market modelling, operational benchmarking tools and data/tech architecture solutions. Power Solutions has seen a triple digit growth rate every year since inception and is now scaling out even more ambitious growth plan into adjacent opportunities (e.g., climate change) to integrate and build new offerings that can better enhance our value proposition to clients globally.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
You will establish and grow a team built around specific assets or verticals within the utility space.
In this role you will be an expert in a subject matter area or topic and be able to develop and deliver insights to our clients at the highest level while engaging and leading delivery teams, setting strategy across the group and supporting the entrepreneurial frames for the team. You will apply traditional tools/frameworks, translate analytics and data and interpret and push teams on results focused around strategy and operations of utility companies.
You will problem solve with teams, senior leadership and clients to deliver McKinsey-level impact. In this role, you will be part of the team that blends analysis of public, proprietary and client data into the insights – operational and strategic – required to optimize the energy assets of our clients and support them in the face of an accelerating the energy transition.
You will have the opportunity to work with cross-functional client teams including engineers, data scientists, IT and software specialists, business managers, etc. You will master the conceptual and quantitative capabilities embedded into our way of working, our solutions and the overall power sector. You will also develop a deep understanding of power system dynamics – build, dispatch, retirement, reserves, weather, etc., to clearly articulate results and insights to external clients and internal colleagues.
You will contribute your own knowledge and prior expertise to the teams. You will help form, coach and sponsor junior team members. You will actively contribute and lead internal and external outreach efforts to grow the brand awareness and support our client development efforts while identifying new opportunities for McKinsey to develop new digital products to better services our clients. You will play an active role in setting the strategy of the group.
