Company News:  Deep Green Tidal Kite Technology

Sweden- and UK-based Minesto's innovation Deep Green "underwater kites" originates from the wind department at Saab Group, who started development in 2003. The concept was more suited for water currents than winds, and since the concept was then beyond the Saab Group's core business, Minesto was formed in 2007. The Deep Green concept make use of hydrodynamics and works in two steps: In the first step the kite lifts by the force of the tidal current. The kite is mounted to the ocean bed and is controlled by a rudder. The kite can then be taken in a desired trajectory. The method will increase the flow speed entering the turbine 10 times. The second step will use a conventional plant to convert the movement into electric power. This makes the Deep Green concept very suitable to harness power from slow moving waters. And no gearboxes are needed.
