The role: 

Under the supervision of the Campaign Director, the Policy Assistant will support Oceana and our campaign to eliminate illegal, un-reported and unregulated (IUU) fishing through transparency. 

In close coordination with the campaign team, the Policy Assistant will help amplify the policy messages and communications of this campaign on social media or in specialized outlets, write content for the Oceana website and conduct research on IUU fishing.

 

Main Responsibilities: 

Assist the lead of the Oceana campaign with communications, research, policy, or logistical tasks.
Prepare and review research on cases of IUU fishing as well as technical and policy content (e.g., IUU fishing vessel alerts, blog posts on available tools to deny services to IUU fishing vessels), as needed.
Prepare and review communication materials for use and distribution online and to media (e.g., social media content, press releases, op-eds, blogs, videos).
Organise and participate in online workshops organized by Oceana with key stakeholders.
Coordinate daily with the campaign lead or other Oceana colleagues to ensure consistent and timely messaging, as well as fully leveraging Oceana’s website, deliverables, and resources.
Stay abreast of ocean news, current social media trends, new opportunities and propose informed ideas to support Oceana’s communications for this campaign.
Complete any other function within the scope that their supervisor may request.
 

 

Candidate Requirements: 

Education and work experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Marine Science, Politics, or other relevant disciplines.
At least two years of experience in policy and communications functions with similar responsibilities, preferably acquired in an international organisation.
Knowledge of the problems associated to illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and of policies to address it.
Experience in an international non-profit organisation.
 

Skills and knowledge:

Native (or C1 equivalent) English. Additional languages are a plus.
Excellent English writing skills, to be able to deliver campaign messaging to different audiences on various platforms (Oceana website, social media, press releases)
Strong research and analytical skills.
Teamwork and organisational alignment.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Achievement focus.
An active listener with strong verbal and written communications skills.
Must be proactive and actively engage fellow colleagues to coordinate actions, assemble and verify information.
Data-driven and experienced in researching complex topics.
Does not feel intimidated by multitasking or working on more than one project at once.  
Genuine interest in ocean conservation and knowledge of EU policy.
