About the Position
Process Engineers in this role will be on site at our West Sacramento location and are responsible for designing, procuring, and constructing bench scale and pilot scale systems that will inform Origin’s future commercial scale facilities. The Process Engineer will use data generated from these systems to develop heuristics that drive design efforts for first-of-their-kind commercial facilities. Safe design and hazard evaluation is critical to this position, as is a strong foundation in first-principles based problem solving and troubleshooting.
You will be responsible for:
- Design and construction of separation processes for unique and challenging compounds, including distillation and crystallization
- Commissioning and start-up of bench and pilot scale unit operations alongside the pilot operations team
- Authoring original documents such as batch cards, operating procedures, PFDs, P&IDs, as well as newly identified procedures, guidelines and standard company practices
- Working with vendors and industry experts to identify process equipment and specifications and verify proper installation/operation for a variety of process equipment, such as pumps, instrumentation, reaction vessels, etc.
- Forming a strong understanding of process specifics, such as reaction mechanisms, chemical kinetics, suitable materials of construction, and physical properties
- Receiving raw data from bench and pilot scale systems, and curating it to analyze system performance and key process indicators
Other Duties:
- Providing technical and project execution mentorship, guidance, and support to other engineers, including reviewing other’s engineering work and providing constructive feedback
- Leading safety reviews and engineering design reviews
- Troubleshooting chemical reaction systems and equipment using engineering documents, operator testimonials, plant data, and in-field exploration
- Communicating and collaborating with other engineering disciplines, plant operators, synthetic and analytical chemists, and members of the management team
- Incorporating pilot plant and research findings into process flow and equipment designs

About You
You:
- Are familiar with safety review exercises (i.e. PHA, HAZOP, LOPA), can design intrinsically safe processes and control systems, including PID loop development and tuning, equipment selection, sample ports, and valve placement
- Can lead a team of engineers through all steps of project execution, from conceptualization and definition, all the way to construction, commissioning, start up and operating
- You can define operating envelopes, required engineering controls, and best handling practices at pilot and commercial scales
- Can safely manage the physical demands/working environment
- Are able to safely handle hazardous materials
- Able to move / lift 50 pounds
- You are able to be on your feet up to 8 hours a day
- Are able to wear a respirator and fire-resistant clothing for 1+ hour a day

- B.S. in Chemical Engineering or related field
- 6+ years relevant industrial experience
- Operational, mechanical, and basic electrical skills
- Ability to create a mass and energy balance on a defined system
- Ability to apply engineering fundamentals such as heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and process design
- Experience with reading and creating PFDs / P&IDs
- Able to concisely communicate project objectives and constraints
