About

Latvia's capital Riga municipal water supply and sewerage

The City of Rīga’s drinking water is obtained from two sources – the surface resource “Daugava” and underground resource “Baltezers – Zaķumuiža”.

Water supply from surface resources.

The majority of drinking water consumers in Rīga live on the Daugava’s left bank and receive their water from Rīga’s HES water reservoir. The water is pumped from the Daugava River’s (Rīga’s HES) deepest parts and transported through pipes to the “Daugava” water treatment station. Here the water is transformed to drinking water quality by adding chemical agents to purify and disinfect it, allowing it to settle and then by filtering it multiple times. Ozone is used to disinfect the water.

In a 24 hour period, the “Daugava” water treatment station is capable of producing up to 210,000 m3 of drinking water. Both the quality of the drinking water and plant safety conform to European standards.
