Organic and Inorganic Solids-Water Separation / Dehumidification / Drying Sludges

We introduce a new transformative technology for treating liquid septage and liquid sludge to Class A level. The two-stage technology consists of: i) dewatering liquid sludge with average total solids ranging from 0.2% to 7% or higher to sludge cake with percent total solids ranging from 15% to 25%; and ii) dehumidifying, i.e. drying, the dewatered sludge cake at low temperature utilizing heat pump dehumidification principles to 90% total solids. The final product is a pasteurized Class A Biosolids with no pathogens that meets vector attraction reduction requirements as per U.S. EPA Rule 503 requirements. The low temperature dehumidification technology keeps biosolids caloric and nutrient contents intact and does not change biosolids’ chemical characteristics. Energy requirements are low; to dehumidify one ton of sludge cake from 20% to 90% total solids requires an average of 160 kWh compared to 700 kWh requirements of existing drying technologies. This is achieved through patented heat pump technology, hot air recycling within the treatment closed system and the increasing of sludge surface area that facilitates evaporation of water.
Utilizing our low temperature dehumidification technologies reduce the weight of sludge cake by an average factor of more than 4.5, which results in significant reductions of biosolids’ weight and hence hauling cost. For example, utilizing our technology in a treatment plant that produces 125,000 tons of 20% sludge cake per year would result in generating 27,778 tons of pasteurized dried Class A Biosolids while meeting vector attraction reduction requirements.Information
