In-Pipe Hydropower Generation by Super Butterfly

Apart from harvesting energy from solar and wind sources, we can also utilize excess pressures from our water supply distribution networks. Super Butterfly is a newly designed in-pipe hydropower generation system that can harness excess pressure from the water pipe and convert it into clean electric energy without disturbing water production and water demand.

The design separates water flow into main water channel in the middle and power generation (PG) channels on both sides of the pipe. Water in the PG channels is compressed by nozzles before hitting and spinning turbines for power generation. This way, the water can still flow freely during service or maintenance work to the turbine or any components in the power generation system. Water flow to the power generation channels can be controlled using valves.

Depending on the amount of excess pressure, demand and location condition, the system can be installed horizontally, vertically or with only a single turbine and also in series. All these advantageous key features were combined within a compact single pipe structure. Since our technology is relatively compact, it is also suitable for city and urban areas where the energy demand is higher. The system will be tailor-made based on the water flow and operation conditions, where basically the bigger the power generation channel’s size the more energy can be harvested. Thus, a proper feasibility study is necessary before the implementation of the system so that an optimum amount of power can be produced without compromising the requirement of the water supply.
