Alternatives to Chlorine

Over the past several decades, there has been a growing awareness of the negative impacts of chemical wastewater treatment, leading to a shift towards alternatives like ultraviolet (UV) treatment. UV treatment offers various cost-saving and operational benefits, which have driven its adoption in municipal wastewater facilities. Regulations limiting residual chlorine have further accelerated the development of UV treatment systems, which have been widely adopted since the first U.S. installation in 1982. Today, approximately 50% of wastewater in North America is treated using UV technology. UV light effectively inactivates microorganisms quickly without adding harmful by-products to the water or altering its chemical composition.
