Job Purpose
This is an exciting opportunity to join the growing Hydraulic Engineering discipline within the Engineering function providing a critical service across the business. The role will report to the Chief Hydraulic Engineer and you will be responsible for the provision of Hydraulic Engineering services to support the delivery of: the Capital Programme, Operational Engineering, Special Projects, and Studies and Investigations.
You will be accountable for the delivery of a range of projects throughout United Utilities and you will plan and manage technical hydraulic resources for the programme hub. You will work closely with other technical disciplines and internal clients to build and maintain strong relationships.
United Utilities and the rest of the water industry are facing significant challenges associated with large programmes of work and limited budgets. The successful candidate will initially provide hydraulic support in one technical area with exciting future opportunities to work within other areas of the team, including; treatment works design, rivers and reservoirs, surge alleviation, network design etc.
Job Accountabilities
As Principal Hydraulic Engineer, you will lead the delivery of hydraulic engineering services across all relevant areas of the business and provide key services as part of multi-disciplinary teams in highly technical and commercial environments.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to experience different challenges across the hydraulic team with a strong focus on developing their career. The candidate will be supported with different learning opportunities and a space to grow within the organisation. Areas of focus include:
- Organising and managing commission orders e.g. to the Engineering Service Provider or external modelling contractors
- Learning and applying new hydraulic engineering, hydrological or transient analysis practices to support the wider deliverables of the Hydraulics Team
- Ensuring that all activities undertaken and engineering outputs provided are in accordance with Health and Safety Legislation and Accepted Practice
- Working closely and developing strong relationships with engineering and programme managers within their delivery area and with all internal clients and partners
- Leading a team of technical resources and accountability for technical decision-making
- Accountable for the technical delivery of projects within budget and programme
- Ensuring that all engineering outputs provided are in accordance with an appropriate Quality Management System
- Owning Engineering standards, procedures and technical software and hardware
- Responsibility for raising the external profile of UU Hydraulic Engineering team
- Accountable for maintaining and developing discipline engineering expertise.
Knowledge and Skills
The successful candidate will need to be a chartered professional of a relevant engineering institution with extensive experience of treatment works hydraulics, flow control and permitting, and either; transient, hydrology or geomorphology of reservoirs and rivers. You will also need:
- Strong technical competence and leadership skills, coupled with high levels of emotional intelligence
- An ability to influence as well as direct technical solutions across the whole of UU
- Experience in leading successful multi-disciplinary resources in a highly technical and commercial environment
- Experience in leading and delivering capital and strategic projects and providing operational support in the water industry or other sectors
- Experience of delivering projects across the complete project lifecycle from needs to concept and feasibility through to detailed design, technical assurance, testing and commissioning and final handover.
